Question: What
is dedicated service?
Answer: Dedicated
service involves running a telephone line from a POP, a point of
presence of a long distance carrier, to your business location.
The dedicated circuit is typically called a "T1", which
provides 24 channels for long distance calls. The benefit of
dedicated service is that your per minute rates are lower. This is
possible because the dedicated line to your location connects directly
to your long distance carrier thus bypassing the local company and their
fees. But there are costs associated with this service.
1. You have to pay the long distance carrier for running that
telephone line to your location and maintaining it. This cost is
usually referred to as a local loop charge. The main determining
factor of the amount of this monthly charge is your location's distance
from the carrier's POP. We have seen this cost vary between $100
and $2,500 per month. 2. You have to purchase
equipment to handle the 24 channels of connectivity to your
